Open an American Bank Account as a Foreigner

how does it work?

Opening a Business Bank Account in the U.S.: Opportunities for European Entrepreneurs

Opening a business bank account is possible without needing to travel to America. As long as your business is registered, such as an INC or LLC, and you have an Employer Identification Number (EIN), you can proceed with the application.

You will receive a debit card. As a European, you won't have a Credit Score / FICO® Score, so obtaining a credit card immediately is usually not an option. However, you can use your (MasterCard) Debit Card as a credit card. This simply means that as long as there is enough money in your account, you can make purchases and payments, with a daily limit, of course.

Only after building a solid track record with a bank, often over more than 2 years, can you apply for a business credit card. A debit card allows you to do many things like paying in stores, restaurants, or getting gas. However, it cannot be used to book a rental car or reserve a hotel room, as deposits are always required on a credit card. For all other direct payment needs, you can use a debit card just like a credit card.

What Are the Available Options?

  • European Company (e.g., GMBH, Ltd, SARL, AS): If you have a European company, you can open a U.S. dollar account under your company’s name with an American bank. You'll need a passport from your country, a business address in your home country, and an existing business bank account with a reputable European bank such as Deutsche Bank, HSBC, or Société Générale. This new dollar account will be part of your European financial records and accounting.

  • USA INC: If you have established and registered an INC in the U.S. with a business address, you can open a U.S. dollar account at an American bank using your EIN number. You'll need a passport and a U.S. business address. This account will be part of your U.S. financial records and accounting.

  • USA LLC: Similarly, if you have established and registered an LLC in the U.S. with a business address, you can open a U.S. dollar account at an American bank with your EIN number. A passport and U.S. business address are required. This account will be part of your U.S. financial records and accounting.

Banks use systems to check whether individuals are not wanted or have been involved in money laundering.

What is an EIN number?

The EIN is an Employer Identification Number, also known as the Federal Employer Identification Number or Federal Tax Identification Number. This unique number can be requested if you have a business in America, such as an INC or LLC. Please note that we cannot guarantee the opening of an account. Banks have extensive rules for compliance, KYC (Know Your Customer), UBOs (Ultimate Beneficial Owners), and CDD (Customer Due Diligence).

If you run a standard business and conduct normal operations, we are happy to assist you. We assume you are a resident with a European nationality, possessing a passport from your home country. Depending on the state where you established your LLC or INC, and considering your listed officers, we open the account at a reputable American bank.

Examples of American Banks

In Florida, you'll find all the well-known banks such as Bank of America, Chase, Fifth Third Bank (53Bank), and Wells Fargo. Local banks with fewer branches or offices are also often active. We have strong connections with all major commercial banks that operate in multiple states. Instead of opening a foreign currency account with Rabobank, ING, or ABN AMRO, you can open a true dollar account with an American bank.

Can I Choose?

Soms zijn mensen op vakantie bij een lokale bank, een community bank, even “geld wezen pinnen”. Dan komt dus Sometimes, while on vacation, people visit a local or community bank to withdraw money, which naturally raises the question: "I want an account at ABC Bank or XYZ Bank." We collaborate with a select group of commercial banks, so you cannot specify a preference. Instead, we match you with the best bank for your business based on your company profile.

Business Bank Account for Non-Residents

For European companies conducting business in and with the U.S., opening a dollar account is an important step. It allows you to more easily participate in economic transactions and introduces you to things like checks. Instead of cash or electronic transfers, larger amounts are often paid using a "cashier’s check." A cashier's check is a type of official check issued and signed by banks.

Modern banks can now verify your identity using a (live) video connection for a form of "proof of life" attestation. This verifies that you are alive and the rightful owner of the identification document. Keep in mind that not all banks in the U.S. have adopted this technology yet.
