Dutch Start-ups Are Increasingly Opting for American Ventures

It’s undeniable: more and more Dutch start-ups are packing up and heading abroad. And honestly? It’s quite understandable. They’re looking for places where they can access funding more easily, find greater opportunities, and avoid getting bogged down by a maze of regulations in the Netherlands.

The problem? In the Netherlands, it’s simply challenging to find investors willing to think big. While a Dutch company struggles to raise 2 million euros, their American counterpart easily secures tens of millions. When calculated per capita, only 111 euros a year are invested in start-ups in the Netherlands, compared to 803 euros in America. That disparity is astonishing!

The statistics speak for themselves. Of the truly successful European start-ups (those that become billion-dollar companies), 40 out of 147 relocated between 2008 and 2021.

Guess where they went?

That’s right, America!

And it’s not getting any better.

The Netherlands is slipping further down the global ranking of favorable countries for entrepreneurship. From being in the top 5, we’ve now dropped to 9th place. It’s understandable, considering other countries are rolling out the red carpet for our entrepreneurs. The United Arab Emirates, for instance, sometimes covers salaries for the first year!

But it’s not just about the money. In America, there’s a different approach to start-ups. They see opportunities where we, as Dutch, often see risks. With Donald Trump’s promise to give the tech sector more freedom, it’s becoming even more attractive there.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. The Netherlands still has much to offer: top talent, a perfect location, widespread English proficiency, and excellent educational institutions. Foreign investors are indeed interested in what we are doing here. But if we don’t want all our innovative companies to leave, we need to take action. Otherwise, Europe risks missing the boat in the global tech race with America and China. And that would be a shame, considering all that Dutch talent, right?
